Hi there! I write tiny driver (https://tinydriver.substack.com/), a weekly newsletter about research, pedagogy, culture & their intersections in the humanities!
Oh man, I'm a superfan of so many things, but currently I think I'm obsessed with my re-watch of Veronica Mars. :)
Right on! If you don't know about him, you would love Chad Littlefield. He's all about positive social risks. Super cool dude. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyWrZceeKNE)
Thank you! This looks fantastic — a much appreciated jolt of inspiration during these long months were random collisions with strangers have been much harder to come by!
Hi! I'm Lyndsey, and my substack about commonplace faith for progressive Christians is lyndseymedford.substack.com. I'm currently a superfan of the book Thinking In Systems!
Hi! I'm Melanie, just starting out at Melanie.substack.com writing about creative motivation and love for life. I'm a super fan of movies that involve delicious food :)
Hi! I'm Jordan, I write Rebooting about digital well-being and building a better relationship with the devices in our lives. I'm also a super fan of Twin Peaks and Bojack Horseman.
Whoops! Duplicating from the Zoom chat since I'm just now seeing this but here's my intro. ~
I’m Harrison and I write about economics and politics in the Weekend Reccs http://harrisonsatcher.substack.com/. In my day job I work for the University of Chicago. I’m a superfan of breadmaking (pre-COVID, I swear)! : )
Hi there! I'm Ryn, and I write Archive Fever Dream on critical theory, speculative fiction, and Jewish mysticism. I'm a superfan of tarot and astrology :)
Hi, I'm William. I use substack to promote my novels and comics, and I also post on culture, creativity, and other things that start with the letter "c." http://mrwbrust.substack.com. I'm a LEGO superfan, probably.
hi i'm Spencer. I write about paradoxes, what i'm thinking of, beauty, and fantastical short fiction http://spencerchang.substack.com/. I'm a superfan of everything involved in traveling(learning about other people, environments, and of course food :))
Hi everyone! I'm Geoffrey, my Substack is Adventure Snack (http://adventuresnack.substack.com). I write short "choose your path" adventure games you can play in your inbox.
I'm a superfan of VCR board games, because I love bizarre game experiences.
I feel like I'm pretty confident on pinpointing my people, but that's because I know most of my subscribers personally, at this point. I don't know how to attract new folks.
I'm so tiny right now, but one thing I'm starting to do is find other substack writers and sharing their work, just one a week as part of my newsletter. Focusing on similar topics to me, science, society, environment
Still learning how to best bring new people to the table; good at keeping them there once the drinks are poured. This workshop has me thinking more deeply about my "who" — thinking I can start saving paper on invitations that will end up in the bin.
I feel confident in my audience who are fans of my creative work, but would love to build more of a community from folks who enjoy my newsletter content but might not necessarily be a fan of my band/art. 🤞
People have been a mix of friends / family / co-workers wanting to support while others come for the specific topic. I struggle to figure out who to focus on + the level of depth given the varied knowledge levels.
Accountability groups, quiet working sessions, volunteering together (phone banking?), shared google doc of resources, postcard exchange, Twitter chat (very 2010, I know), playing games (Among Us), shared galley around a prompt (ex. Everyone drop in a pic of what the view out their closest window looks like).
My who are curious folks interested in policy, and my what is inspiration -- seems like a monthly book club would be a great activity I could do with them.
I've been doing an "article club" through the pandemic. A different person is responsible each week for selecting an article, which we read then discuss in an hour over zoom. It's been so enriching for me, I can't recommend it enough.
I'm thinking pretty low-key for my small community, but an invitation to share something that would be part of my "recommended links" newsletter (each week I do one original article and another newsletter with a few recommended links related to my topic)
If there is a way for people to keep showing up, participate, and connects people back to the purpose then yes. Sounds like this has some of all of those elements!
1) Patients, providers, students of healthcare professions, and anyone critiquing the healthcare system.
2) People who share my interest in disrupting the status quo and abolition: breaking down the walls of the capitalist, heteronormative, transphobic, cismale hierarchy that is healthcare as it stands now. Those who've experienced healthcare trauma or want to prevent it. Those who've experienced intimate trauma and seek to create safe healthcare exams that may share characteristics of those experiences.
3) Midwives. Doulas. Feminist patients. Academics. All new generations of heatlhcare students.
Future of Belonging (http://https://belonging.substack.com/) brings together everyday social designers like Elena and Corey. They bring curiosity and creative problem solving to the community, willing to both ask questions and prototype their way to building transformational futures of belonging.
i love the concept of bridging the intellectual fault line between doing and thinking. I've always been prone to thinking over doing and spent a whole year experimenting with forcing myself to do more doing by default
Stuck at a crossroads. The most prolific commenters tend to be friends or family but they aren't necessarily brining the jam. Who I want my community to bring together is people who are passionate about education, specifically adult education, which are trying to normalize lifelong learning.
I like to see the clarity that there may be a more "important" group who doesn't yet "bring the energy." How can you attract those folks who align with your purpose?
2. people who are seeking to understand the world and each other and dream of a better tomorrow through creative pursuits but recognize the ugly and difficult steps to get there in reality.
Community-first founders, grassroots community organizers, community managers, investors and thought leaders in tech that are interested in community building
They’re all interested in understanding how best to bring people together to support a mission or vision. They find people and their dynamics interesting.
My newsletter is called Reads & Eats, so I guess my people are...Readers & Eaters??? LOL My people care about lifting and amplifying marginalized voices, but they also care about expanding their own worlds.
They are artists who show up as pros and have a purpose to share.
They are communicators, they practise empathy, they have a growth mindset. They bring a diverse range of life experiences and points of view to the conversation and encourage me to think more expansively.
My newsletter brings together: People interested in a space where they can be exposed to cultural artifacts and gems, as well as people who want to have honest convos about addiction and the toxicity of U.S. culture.
Right now with my newsletter I get positive feedback from young queer people and friends who relate to the things I write about as well as older people who feel "they're getting a new window into things" – not sure how to straddle this demo?
Interesting! Do you want to bridge these demos? What would your Substack look like if you bridged these groups more intentionally? What activities might you coordinate?

Oh man, I'm a superfan of so many things, but currently I think I'm obsessed with my re-watch of Veronica Mars. :) (sorry for the repost--I replied to the original q instead of just posting to the thread)
For me, the "why" is the difficult part. My instinct has been to gather people and then see what happens. I still plan to do that to a significant extent. I want to let the community determine much of the "why." But maybe I need to think more about this...

How do you all feel about _Slack_ or _Discord_ as platforms for developing a community?
When COVID-19 became a more known issue around March 2020, I decided to email my list and invite them to a private slack group. I've done a pretty poor job at adding a ton of value there, but it seemed like a way to get everyone pretty close together pretty quickly.
Has anyone else done this (or something similar) successfully?
Chris you might check out Carly Ayres Slack group, 100s under 100. She offers inspiration on creating a space for people to show up and chat online. Bailey and Carly revisited a previous conversation they had on the Get Together podcast back in March and discussed when / why people might start online "watering holes" at this time. https://gettogether.fm/episodes/100s-under-100-2

❓What are the opportunity areas to strengthen your Substack community?
Which steps in building community do you excel at? What can you improve on?
Hit reply and share your reflections in the thread👇.
My newsletter's content relies on folks hearing that I'm looking for emerging marginalized writers. Finding those communities can be hard.
But the question of who wants to read them can be even harder.
OMG!!!!! HIIIIIIIIII <3
i don't have your email addy anymore...do you still have mine?
Definitely still on the first step of pinpointing my people
It's easier said than done!
same
Yes, definitely!
Me too!
This workshop is getting me thinking about things my community might be able to do together, and how I can empower other leaders within it.
Yeah! It's not about what you can do *for* readers, but what you and your readers can do together.
I feel like I'm pretty confident on pinpointing my people, but that's because I know most of my subscribers personally, at this point. I don't know how to attract new folks.
I need to be better at Cultivating identity.... and paying better attention to who is showing up I'm good at doing things together and supercharging.
https://theorygang.substack.com/
I'm so tiny right now, but one thing I'm starting to do is find other substack writers and sharing their work, just one a week as part of my newsletter. Focusing on similar topics to me, science, society, environment
Spotlighting others is powerful!
Getting people together is easy. I'm still figuring out how to supercharge them and getting them talking.
Still learning how to best bring new people to the table; good at keeping them there once the drinks are poured. This workshop has me thinking more deeply about my "who" — thinking I can start saving paper on invitations that will end up in the bin.
I like that way of putting it. As we say "people who care are more powerful than people who don;t"
I feel confident in my audience who are fans of my creative work, but would love to build more of a community from folks who enjoy my newsletter content but might not necessarily be a fan of my band/art. 🤞
People have been a mix of friends / family / co-workers wanting to support while others come for the specific topic. I struggle to figure out who to focus on + the level of depth given the varied knowledge levels.
pinpointing people can be hard. Would love some help with that!
Anna, it's easier said than done. You might find this helpful: https://research.people-and.com/pinpointing-who-and-why-8ab628a02ea0
💡 Got an idea for a shared activity.
Leave it here👇
A Zoom gathering, monthly, on a topic that teachers are struggling with (such as teaching online - a hot topic right now).
Love this
I do book clubs and fun intellectual social events.
I think you would like my friend Mike Sturm: (https://woolgathering.substack.com/)
Accountability groups, quiet working sessions, volunteering together (phone banking?), shared google doc of resources, postcard exchange, Twitter chat (very 2010, I know), playing games (Among Us), shared galley around a prompt (ex. Everyone drop in a pic of what the view out their closest window looks like).
games are my favorite
AMA or webinars with plant-based diet professionals, meal prep experts, etc.
About to start a separate substack of writing prompts. I'm still working out the particulars.
If there is a way for people to keep showing up, participate, and connects people back to the purpose then yes. Sounds like this has some of all of those elements!
💡 Who does your community bring together? List 3+ possible “Whos.”
Thing to think about:
1️⃣ Name this group of people (e.g.)
2️⃣ Describe them in 1-2 sentences. Include the key traits they bring to the community (e.g. relevant skills, interests, experiences, or backgrounds)
3️⃣ Add specific names/personas to us visualize these readers.
Share your WHO in the thread👇.

2 – People who want to use creativity in their meditation practice and/or bring a meditative sensibility into their artistic practice

excited about your session soon!
People who like to think deeply, laugh, and care about the world and those in it.
Well, that's me at least!
I feel like my people are those who bridge the intellectual fault line between do-ers and thinkers.
i love the concept of bridging the intellectual fault line between doing and thinking. I've always been prone to thinking over doing and spent a whole year experimenting with forcing myself to do more doing by default
Thank you. I am in the same bucket, friend!
Stuck at a crossroads. The most prolific commenters tend to be friends or family but they aren't necessarily brining the jam. Who I want my community to bring together is people who are passionate about education, specifically adult education, which are trying to normalize lifelong learning.
To be more specific: Builders and Investors in the adult education space.

Interesting! Do you want to bridge these demos? What would your Substack look like if you bridged these groups more intentionally? What activities might you coordinate?
I've been thinking about ways to bridge them- something like an intergenerational/crossgen penpal thing
1. Plant-based diet curious and lover.
2. People interested in eating less animal products without spending to much time researching, finding recipes.
3. Conscious people interested in eating healthier, helping the planet and the animals.

Hi! My name is Yi Shun Lai. My Substack is yishunlai.substack.com, and it's a newsletter about food written entirely by paid marginalized writers. I'm a superfan of fig beetles, whose carapaces are too heavy for them: they always look drunk.
Well. Written by paid writers and me. :) Oops.

Very helpful Activity section - I have a couple of new ideas that build upon what I've been hearing from the first community members. Thanks!
For me, the "why" is the difficult part. My instinct has been to gather people and then see what happens. I still plan to do that to a significant extent. I want to let the community determine much of the "why." But maybe I need to think more about this...
skill development (get smarter about strategy)
inspiration (discover new ideas from each other)
achieve their goals / outcomes
If you had to prioritize, which one is at the top?
I'm Meredith, I haven't started my Substack newsletter yet. I'm a superfan of moss and lichen.

Hi Mil! Welcome :)
Bailey and Carly revisited a previous conversation they had on the Get Together podcast back in March and discussed when / why people might start online "watering holes" at this time. https://gettogether.fm/episodes/100s-under-100-2
Why they need to not feel they are alone in their struggle to obtain their dream into a reality.
I think I need an illustrator from nerdfighters.

I really love so many Substack newsletters but appreciate awards for good boys especially!
I am a superfan of so many things, which is a reason my Substack is called Gathering, but I especially love Central European literature, Maya Deren, Toni Morrison and blasting through superficial bullshit.
